Datis was a Median general and admiral who served the Achaemenid Empire under Darius I of Persia. In 490 BCE, Datis was one of the commanders responsible for the siege of Naxos Island and the sacking of Eretria in Euboea, along with the Immortals, elite troops of the empire.
On his way back from the Battle of Marathon, Datis stopped at the Silver Islands. Unfortunately for him, he never returned as his ship was sunk off the coast of Delos.[1]
During the Peloponnesian War, his shipwreck was explored by the misthios Kassandra.[2]
Trivia
- Historically, Datis was speculated by Ctesias to have been slain at the Battle of Marathon. However, this conflicted with Herodotos's claim of him surviving the battle.
