The Constellation of Kallisto was the lair of the legendary bear Kallisto within the Golden Fields region of Arkadia, Greece during the 5th century BCE. The location was made up of a clearing with cut-down trees, as well as a cave.
During the Peloponnesian War the Spartan misthios Kassandra came to the place. Kassandra slew the bear and looted its pelt and returned it to Daphnae, the leader of the Daughters of Artemis.[1]
Trivia
- The tree stumps in the area form the seven main stars of the constellation Ursa Major, into which Zeus was said to have changed Kallisto after her death.
