Sýnin was a female[1][2] common raven that served as a loyal companion to the Raven Clan shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir during the late 9th century.[3] She was named after Odin's familiar given to him by Baldr to replace Muninn.[4]

Biography

Eivor met and befriended Sýnin in Norway, at some point following the Viking's adoption by King Styrbjorn Sigvaldisson of the Raven Clan around 855.[5] Ever since, the two have been inseparable, with Sýnin accompanying Eivor when she left Norway and settled in England in 873,[6] as well as on her futher travels to Vinland,[7] Ireland,[8] Francia,[9] and the Isle of Skye.[10]

When Eivor decided to leave England for good and travel to Vinland to better understand her connection with Odin around 889, Sýnin did not seem to accompany her.[11] As such, it can be assumed that Sýnin had since passed away, especially given that the natural lifespan of a common raven is of about 10 to 15 years, although some individuals have been known to far surpass that.[12]

Skills

Sýnin shared a symbiotic relationship with her master who, with the ability of Eagle Vision, could see the world through her eyes, greatly aiding Eivor in reconnaissance. Additionally, Sýnin could attack enemy guards as a distraction for Eivor to sneak past them undetected.[3]

Skins

In 2020, while reliving Eivor's genetic memories through the Portable Animus HR-8.5, the Assassin Layla Hassan modified the Animus interface to allow for a variety of skins to be applied to Sýnin:

Behind the scenes

Sýnin is a companion animal for Eivor in Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, similarly to Senu in Assassin's Creed: Origins and Ikaros in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey. She first appeared in the game's reveal livestream, flying over Eivor's shoulder.[13] Her name was revealed in an interview with USGamer,[14] and is the definitive form of the Old Norse word sýn, meaning 'sight, vision'. As such, Sýnin's name is intended to mean 'insight' and is pronounced "Sue-nin" (/'suːnɪn/).[15]
