Oskoreia (English: Wild Hunt; lit: noisy riders or The Ride of Asgard) was a pagan festival celebrated by Norse people during the Viking expansion to celebrate the harvest, honor the dead, and protect their settlements from the Wild Hunt.
Mythology[edit | edit source]
Oskoreia, or the Wild Hunt, was a folklore motif found in many pre-Christian European cultures in which a spectral host of hunters was led by a legendary figure, usually Odin. People who witnessed the Hunt could either die or be forced to join the hunters. The event signified a change in the season but also as a harbinger of war and unrest.[1]
History[edit | edit source]
Oskoreia festivals were held at Ravensthorpe, where the settlement was furnished with decorations,[2] including a longship with the names of the dead carved into its hull.[3] Residents prepared to protect their village from the Wild Hunt, practicing their riding,[4] shooting,[5] and fighting.[6]
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
As part of Assassin's Creed: Valhalla's post-launch content, an Oskoreia Season event was added to the settlement mechanic for a limited time. The first in-game event ran from 11 November–9 December 2021,[7][8] and the second event ran from 20 October–10 November 2022.[9]
