Barnabas was a Greek captain of the ship Adrestia active during the Peloponnesian War, becoming a vital companion to the Misthios.[1]
In his youth, he was a soldier before turning to commercial shipping for a livelihood. In this capacity, he developed a network of contacts throughout Greece including local leaders and mercenaries which became a primary source of information for the Misthios. It was in offering his boat and small crew to the Spartan mercenary to leave Kephallonia that they first became friends.[1]
