Theramenes was a Greek healer and the father of Praxilla who lived in Balagrae in Cyrenaica during the 1st century BCE.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Theramenes operated a clinic outside the Asklepieion in Balagrae, providing medical aid to the residents in the town, in addition to the surrounding region.[1] In 47 BCE, he met the Medjay Bayek of Siwa, who brought a blinded old man, Galenos, to the clinic. As the Medjay offered to help him recover a list of ingredients for Galenos' treatment, Theramenes provided a list of items: two ibex horns and three snake venoms. After recovering the materials, Theramenese provided Bayek information on the silphium, a type of weed which could provide pain relief to injuries. Since the plant was being processed located in a Roman depot, Theramenes enlisted his help to recover the weed, which Bayek succeeded in.[2]
