Ranofer was an Egyptian embalmer who lived in Upper Egypt during the 1st century BCE. He was the brother of Raia and the brother-in-law of Anen.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Ranofer was formerly an embalmer of the dead in Set-Ma'at, responsible for mummifying the deceased and burying them in the Workers' Necropolis behind the Valley of the Kings. Sometime prior to 38 BCE, Ranofer himself passed away and buried in necropolis. In order to guide his soul to the afterlife, his sister Raia fashioned an amulet and placed it in his tomb.
Around 38 BCE, Ranofer's tomb was desecrated by a group of tomb robbers, who used the personal hammer of his brother-in-law, Anen, to ransack the tomb and took his mummified body.[1]
Ranofer's body was later taken to a bandit camp in the Valley of the Kings, where it was burned along with other mummies.
