Nef (died 48 BCE) was an Egyptian resident of Memphis who housed homeless children during the reign of Ptolemy XIII.
Biography[edit | edit source]
During the mid 1st century BCE, Nef took in children who were homeless and had lived on the streets in the city. By 48 BCE, he had taken in many children, such as Apheru, Neema, Ngozi,[1] Iphri, as well as a teenage girl named Kawit.[2] That year, the wealthy Roman woman Gaia Afrania kidnapped several of the children and sought to sell them as slaves. Kawit devoted herself to freeing the children, which she was able to do so with the help of the Medjay Bayek of Siwa.[2] As retaliation for Kawit's action, Gaia ordered Nef's murder before she departed for Alexandria. Bayek and Kawit arrived too late to save him from the Roman, but after entrusting Kawit to look after the children, Bayek took it upon himself to avenge Nef's death in her place.[3]
