Foundry of Hephaistos is a volcanic island located east off the coast of Argolis, Greece. The tomb of the Spartan and Messenian Queen Gorgophone was located beneath the island.
During the Peloponnesian War, the Spartan misthios Kassandra was tasked by a mysterious woman to prove her courage by jumping from the highest point on the island, leading to its very depths, in order to find a helmet. Using a key she had acquired earlier, Kassandra gained entry to Gorgophone's tomb and retrieved the Queen's helmet for the mysterious woman. Leaving the tomb she searched the depths and found an opening to escape through, after which she returned to the mainland.[1]
