Elis is a regional unit of Greece, geographically situated in the Peloponnese but administered as part of the Western Greece region.

Influence[edit | edit source]

In Elis lay the Sanctuary of Olympia, which was home to the Temple of Zeus that, in turn, housed one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the statue of Zeus made by Phidias.^[1] Apart from this, the sanctuary also hosted the Olympic Games every four years, producing champions such as Kyros of Zarax.^[2]

Throughout the 5th century BCE, Elis' economy revolved around training athletes for the Olympic Games and hosting the event. The region did not have a sizeable population, but it received a hefty amount of visits from athletes and tourists year-round.^[1]

Elis is the westernmost region of the Peloponnese peninsula. Its terrain is marked by vast swamps.^[1]
