The Sanctuary of Sounion was a sanctuary located on Cape Sounion within the Attikan peninsula.
History[edit | edit source]
In classical antiquity, it was known for housing a Temple of Poseidon that was considered one of the major monuments of the Golden Age of Athens.[1]
Due to the temple's presence, sailors would often visit the sanctuary to pay for safe passage on the seas. The Spartan misthios Kassandra did so as well during the Peloponnesian War.[2]
