The Kheshig were the Imperial bodyguard of the Mongol royal family during the Mongol Empire. They did not go to war with the rest of the Mongolian army, as they were tasked with seeing to the Khan's personal safety at all times.[1]
History[edit | edit source]
In 1227, the Kheshig were acting as the personal guards of the founder of the Mongol Empire, Genghis Khan. While stationed in Xingqing, Western Xia, the Kheshig spotted the Assassins Qulan Gal and Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad infiltrating the Mongol camp to kill the Khan and moved to alert him. However, the Assassins eliminated all the Kheshig present,[2] allowing Qulan and Altaïr's son Darim to assassinate Genghis Khan.[3][4]
By 1259, the Kheshig continued to guard the Khan's family. During the march to Burkhan Khaldun to lay Möngke Khan's body to rest, they were led by Asutai, the fourth son of Möngke. During the march, Asutai spoke with the Mongolian commander Bayan and invited him to join the Kheshig and the Templars, explaining how he and his father were members of the Order, as were most of the Kheshig themselves. Ultimately, Bayan accepted and was recruited into both organizations.[5]
