Bellamy: "I have it... at last! In this chest!... The Fragment of Eden!"
Alonzo: "...A fragment of Eden?"
Bellamy: "A device with a mind of its own... strong enough to bend wills and shape destinies!"
Alonzo: "...We could use it!... Become the kings of the seas!"
Bellamy: "That is what my enemies would do... corrupt its purpose to secure power! Spread a form of slavery that is more insidious than the trafficking of humans... but just as evil!"

—Samuel Bellamy, explaining the Fragment's powers and desirability, 1717.[src]-[m]

The Fragment of Eden was a Piece of Eden created by the Isu that held powers similar to those of an Apple of Eden, but could also be used to empower one's ship, boosting its speed and firepower.

History[edit | edit source]

Golden Age of Piracy[edit | edit source]

In the early 18th century, the Fragment was in the possession of Laurens Prins until his ship, the Whydah, was seized by Samuel Bellamy, Olivier Levasseur, and Alonzo Batilla in February 1717. Samuel then took the Whydah for himself to misdirect the Templars into chasing him, while handing the artifact to Alonzo.[2] During Alonzo's efforts to gather supplies for the failing town of Nassau, which was led by Christopher Condent in Edward Thatch and Benjamin Hornigold's absence, he passed the artifact into Levasseur's care, but soon discovered on his return that the pirate had taken the artifact and left, leaving clues behind to guide Alonzo after him.[3]

During his search to retrieve the Fragment, Alonzo came across the wreck of Levasseur's ship, Le Postillon, leading him to assume the Templars had killed his friend for the Fragment. However, after destroying a slaver fort in rage, Alonzo chased the ship that left and heard word of Levasseur's survival from Captain Barnes, who mentioned that the pirate had used the Fragment to take over another ship following Le Postillon's destruction. In exchange for sparing Barnes' life, Alonzo was handed Levasseur's decryption codex, from which he learned that his friend had sailed to Mayaguana in order to escape the Templars.[4]

Alonzo continued his quest across the Caribbean and eventually learned that Levasseur had joined Thatch's crew and was on his way to Charleston to leave the West Indies for good.[5] After Alonzo caught up and was reunited with his friend, Levasseur told him that he had secured the Fragment in the Caicos Islands and, keeping their promise to Bellamy to safeguard the object, the two pirates departed to retrieve the artifact.[6]

Alonzo Batilla holding the Fragment

As soon as they secured the Fragment, they were ambushed by Condent, who demanded that the pirates hand over the artifact. Although Condent's ship was much stronger, Alonzo refused to surrender the Fragment, and sank Condent's vessel after using the artifact to augment his own ship.[6]

Just as Alonzo defeated Condent, a British war fleet led by the pirate hunter and Templar Woodes Rogers appeared on the horizon. Pressed for time, Alonzo decided that he would delay the fleet, while Levasseur was to leave with the Fragment. Levasseur fled aboard a Portuguese galleon and told Alonzo that if something went wrong, he would find a way to tell him where he had hidden the artifact. Alonzo then sailed out to confront the British fleet, stalling them until Levasseur could escape.[6]

Modern times[edit | edit source]

In 2014, Abstergo Entertainment analyzed Alonzo Batilla's memories in order to find the location of the Fragment of Eden, which was rumored to have been buried with the rest of Olivier Levasseur's treasure. However, Alonzo's memories ultimately proved to be a dead end.[6]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

The Fragment of Eden, a Piece of Eden introduced in the 2013 mobile game Assassin's Creed: Pirates, serves as the MacGuffin which drives most of the game's plot. Despite this, the Fragment's appearance is never actually revealed, as it is kept in a chest in every scene it appears in.
