Mitsuko Nakamura is the Director of Research of Abstergo Industries' Lineage Discovery and Acquisition, a division based in Philadelphia. As such, she is also a member of the Inner Sanctum, which acts as both an elite council for the Templar Order and Abstergo's board of directors.[1][2]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Abstergo Files[edit | edit source]

In October 2012, details of the Inner Sanctum of the Templar Order were made available to recruits of the second stage of the Animi Training Program. Kept in a dossier of Abstergo Files, the one pertaining to the Inner Sanctum was entitled "File.0.17\Ins_InnerSanctum" and included the names and positions of all its members, Nakamura being one of them. Revealing her affiliation with the Lineage Discovery and Acquisition department.[1]

Milton Jones' ancestry[edit | edit source]

On 16 December 2013, Nakamura was notified of the discovery of Milton Jones' ancestral ties to the Assassin Adéwalé by Dr. Damian Saravakos, revealing that while they may not find new artifacts in his memories, the genetic memory would be valuable to the employees at Abstergo Entertainment.[3]

Meeting with Isabelle Ardant[edit | edit source]

On 15 October 2015, Nakamura had a conference with Isabelle Ardant. Details of the meeting where kept in Ardant's calendar, which was visible to the Assassins Rebecca Crane and Shaun Hastings when they infiltrated Ardant's office to plant a bug.[4]

Induction and Exoneration of Simon Hathaway[edit | edit source]

In October 2016, Nakamura was present during the initiation of Ardant's successor Simon Hathaway into the Inner Sanctum. Ten days later, she was among those who voted to clear Hathaway of all the charges brought against him, convinced by his speech and that his shady actions were in fact carried out for the benefit of the Templar Order.[5]

Meeting the Black Cross[edit | edit source]

Nakamura and the Inner Sanctum questioning the Black Cross

In March 2017, the Inner Sanctum invited the new Black Cross to a meeting in Quebec, during which Nakamura was present. Displeased that he auto-proclaimed himself their inquisitor, they threatened him and demanded to know his identity. The masked man responded that he came only as a courtesy, to inform them that he was investigating a hostile fifth column within the Order. After affirming his independence, the Black Cross dropped a smoke bomb and disappeared.[6]

Attempted Abstergo account breach[edit | edit source]

In November 2017, the Templar fugitives Thomas Adler and his wife Alice tried to hack Nakamura's Abstergo account to learn more about Project Rainbow, as the access to the intel about the 1943 secret project was reserved to Inner Sanctum members only. However, the Adlers failed to do so and they instead hacked the account of Alan Rikkin, who had recently died and whose account was consequently less protected.[7]

Noa Kim's abduction[edit | edit source]

Nakamura ordering the abduction of Noa Kim

In 2023, Nakamura traveled to the Exitus research vessel in Macau, China to oversee the progress of Doctor Shimazu Sei's mission to locate a Piece of Eden found by the British Assassin Edward Kenway. After the Templars identified one of Kenway's descendants, the Korean-American student Noa Kim, through the WhyYou genealogy site, Nakamura authorized his abduction once Noa had been lured to Macau on the pretense of a vacation prize trip.[8]

While Noa was forced to relive Kenway's memories in the Animus, Nakamura oversaw the procedure alongside Sei and commented on the high number of desynchronization errors, believing they could become a problem down the line. However, Sei assured her that this was a sign of the test subject being strongly synchronized with the ancestor and that they had taken all the necessary precautions. Nakamura then reminded Sei of the importance of the mission's success before leaving to return to Abstergo's headquarters.[9]

Shimazu Sei's defection[edit | edit source]

Sei was ultimately able to locate and recover the Piece of Eden sought by Abstergo, a crescent amulet, though shortly after she betrayed the Templars and went on the run alongside Noa and her personal bodyguard, Yuki. While Sigma Team was dispatched to capture the turncoat, Sei sought to save Noa, who was suffering from a severe case of the Bleeding Effect, and tracked down another Piece of Eden that could cure him.[10]

The apparition of Nakamura taunting Sei

While attempting to retrieve the artifact from the Shwedagon Pagoda, the Piece of Eden subjected Sei to a series of illusions in order to test her will and determine whether she was worthy of claiming it. Among these illusions, Sei was confronted by an apparition of Nakamura, who taunted her for abandoning the Templars in a pointless effort to redeem herself after years of service for Abstergo.[11]

The illusionary Nakamura further tormented Sei with the notion that her family would suffer the consequences of her reckless actions, and that not even the Assassins would accept her, as she was a nobody without the Templars. However, Sei, with encouragement from a vision of her ancestor Shimazu Saito, overcame the illusions by declaring that she would forge her own path, and cut down the apparition of Nakamura with a katana.[11]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

Nakamura's non-canon appearance in Les Deux Royaumes' comic

First introduced by name only in Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Mitsuko Nakamura's first appearance in person was as a man despite having a Japanese female given name, in the now non-canonical modern day storyline of the French Assassin's Creed comic series. This alternative version of Nakamura was responsible for giving direct orders to the Templar agent Vernon Hest. Subsequent entries in the franchise reverted to isolated mentions of Nakamura by name until Assassin's Creed: Heresy confirmed that Nakamura was indeed as a woman canonically.
