Rhode
Rhode was a Messenian helot who lived during the 5th century BCE. She was the mother of Pebble and forced by the Order of Dominion to construct weapons for their army.
Biography
At some point in the 420s BCE, she gave birth to her son Pebble, while living in the Helot camps of Aipeia. Around the same time, she used to work for Harpagos, the Order commander in charge of the operations in Aipeia.[1]
Driven to repeatedly work her fingers to the bone, without mercy, and witnessing the other helots subjected to the same, even the children, Rhode begun stealing food in order for the children at least to have enough to eat. Repeatedly, this was also noticed.
Finally, the soldiers got fed up with her antics, and captured her, intending to execute her as a warning to the others at the agora of Aipeia. Fortunately for her, the Spartan misthios Kassandra intervened, and rescued her.[1]
Rhode thanked the misthios, and told her about the arrangement she had managed to make with a local fisher to save the helot children. Leading Kassandra back to their camp, and introducing her to Pebble and his friends, they then ran through the town to the docks.
There, however, their way was blocked by Harpagos. Threatening the children as well as Rhode, Harpagos fought Kassandra, losing to the delight of the children. Rhode then led them further down the docks, to where the fisher awaited by his ship.[1]
Though Rhode had thought anything but their life as it was in Aipeia was better, when it came time to put Pebble on the ship, she hesitated. [1]
Behind the scenes
Rhode, a character in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey's DLC Legacy of the First Blade: Bloodline, shares her name with one of the Danaides, the daughters of Danaos, in Greek mythology. It is also a variant of the name of the goddess and personification of the island of Rhodes.
