AlUla Oasis

AlUla Oasis is a region covering over 200 hectares of the greater Al-Ula Valley,[1] being part of the Abbasid Caliphate in the 9th century. It was to the east of Al-Ula and surrounded by the Southern Wilds.[2] Inhabitants of Al-Ula would often relocate to family farms at the oasis during the summer, as it was cooler.[3]

History

The region's high water table and soil fertility led to the development of cultivated oases since ancient times,[3][1] with the Dadanites, Lihyanites, and Nabataeans having dug a number of wells to access the fresh water.[4]

Composed of both open fields and walled gardens[1] with elevated walkways, the oases produced wheat and barley in winter and dates in late summer and early autumn. Under the Nabataean Kingdom, cotton was also cultivated.[3] From the early 8th century CE, already under Islamic control, came the implementation of an underground qanat system which made it possible to carry water from the aquifer to the fields, where it was then distributed among the plots through surface channels,[4] as well as the introduction of a variety of citrus fruits. The goods produced at the Oasis was sold on the local markets.[3]

In the 20th century, the qanat system was replaced with the implementation of mechanical pumping techniques.[4]
