"The Order is eternal."
―Ampelius' final words, 38 BCE.[src]-[m]

Ampelius (died 38 BCE) was an officer in the Roman Republic's army who served in the Sinai, Egypt, during the 1st century BCE. As an Order of the Ancients member under Gaius Julius Rufio, he used The Administrator as his cryptonym and oversaw all commerce on the peninsula from his base of operations at the Walls-of-the-Ruler fortress.

Biography

Ampelius originated from Capitolinus in Rome and was trained on the Roman trade routes with the Usipetes and Tencteri, using violence as a means of securing trade. He later came to serve under Rufio as one of his lieutenants and joined the Order of the Ancients.[1]

The local Hidden Ones in Rome, led by Amunet, recorded his actions before sending the intel to the Klysma bureau in the Sinai. Ampelius was later sent to the peninsula, occupying the Walls-of-the-Ruler and blocking the Way of Horus as he saw fit. Ruthless and uncompromising, he used dismemberment as his main method of discipline and fear mongering.[1]

Ampelius clashing with Bayek

In 38 BCE, the Hidden Ones sent Maqwat and her partner to observe Ampelius' actions from an old watchower across the Walls-of-the-Ruler, ensuring that he did not leave the fort. When the Egyptian Hidden Ones' Mentor, Bayek, arrived at the watchtower, Maqwat informed him of Ampelius' whereabouts and warned him that, since the Roman was dressed like his captains, he would be hard to identify. Bayek eventually located and assassinated Ampelius, who with his dying words proclaimed that the Order was eternal.[2]

Trivia

  • The name Ampelius is derived from the Greek word αμπελος (ampelos), meaning 'vine'.
  • Ampelius is shown wearing an anachronistic Imperial Gallic helmet, which was first developed in the 1st century CE. He also wears a wolf pelt, a practice associated with the Velites, a light infantry class from the mid-Republic era rather than high-ranking Roman officers.
