Assassin's Creed: Jade

Assassin's Creed: Codename Jade is the working title for an upcoming mobile installment in the Assassin's Creed series.

Plot synopsis

Explore the path of Xia in Assassin’s Creed Codename Jade. Set in the third century BC during the time of one of the first unified empires in China, an unprecedented era of trade and cultural exchange between East and West is just beginning, but with this comes new challenges and threats lurking in the shadows.

As the adopted child of the master Wei Yu, players will set out on a quest for revenge after their close friend is betrayed. But as they delve deeper into their mission, they will uncover secrets about the past and a powerful force that threatens to destroy everything they hold dear.

From the Great Wall outside the empire’s borders to the imperial capital of Xianyang, journey through a world filled with ancient history and hidden dangers. Defend against the Xiongnu and work to dismantle conspiracies, taking on greater responsibilities, and facing new challenges.

Gameplay

The game is said to be set in 215 BCE, during the Qin dynasty China featuring a fully customizable character players can create, marking a series first. Codename Jade is set to feature all the iconic gameplay of the franchise, optimized for an experience with touch controls. The ability to parkour atop the Great Wall of China and sneak through bustling cities was teased.

Development

The conceptual title of the game was first leaked on 6 September 2022 and reported by Try Hard Guides. It was later confirmed at the Ubisoft Forward livestream during its Assassin's Creed showcase, alongside a short teaser.

In its alpha stages of testing, which lasted from 15–22 December, the game was referred to as Codename: Explore. It was during this week that nearly an hour of gameplay footage was leaked on 18 December, showing almost complete introductory missions, some open-world exploration, and the ability for players to both decide the protagonist's gender, much like Assassin's Creed: Odyssey and Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, as well as customize their appearance. The game's first closed beta tests required signing up to join and lasts from 3–11 August 2023.

On 10 September 2022, Assassin's Creed: Codename Jade was teased during the Assassin's Creed Ubisoft Forward showcase, and an in-engine trailer was shown. Another trailer for Codename Jade was released on 12 June 2023 at Ubisoft Forward 2023, where developers announced they would soon begin registration for the closed beta testing.

The background of the game's title screen is a stone wall engraved in gold with Chinese calligraphy written in the ancient small seal script. Reading right-to-left and top-to-bottom, the translated text revealed two excerpts from the Yishan Stele (峄山碑) dedicated to Qin Shi Huang. The full text reads as follows:

Qin Shi Huang founded the country, in those glorious days of yore, his descendants are kings by descent. He crusaded against the rebellious rebels, his fame shook the four corners of the world, his force reaches as far as the eye can see. The generals follow his orders, it did not take long, then the brutal division of the six vassals was eliminated. Twenty-six years after Qin Shi Huang ascended the throne, the mandate of Heaven has honored me with the title Emperor, Qin SHi Huang was inheriting the path of the rule of law from his ancestors. The great cause of unification is complete, so Qin Shi Huang showered his favors on them, the Emperor himself toured the world. He climbed up the Yin Mountains, the group of ministers competed to follow, everyone was thoughtful and emotional. They reminisce about the times of turmoil, as a result of the division of the country the vassals were divided, that is what caused the war in the world. Attacks and fights are always going on, the blood of the people flows everywhere. This has been going on since the beginning of time, I do not know how many years it has been, even a wise king like the Five Emperors, neither will stop the war. Now Qin Shi Huang united the world, the world is set in one country. Warfare no longer happens, the disaster was wiped out completely. The people live and work in peace, benefits and favors will be passed on forever. For the Emperor's great work of unifying the country the group of ministers could only state a general idea, carve it into the fine stone, as a permanent program for the country. The Emperor said: "The stone carvings everywhere were carved by the First Emperor, now I hvae inherited the title of Emperor but it is not referred to as First Emperor in gold and stone carvings around the world. Into the future, future generations will see these engraved stones and think that they were not engraved by Qin Shi Huang but by his heirs, this would not reveal the great deeds of Qin Shi Huang." The Left Prime Minister Li Si, the Right Prime Minister Feng Quji, Imperial Secretary De they risked their lives to make their case: "We request that this imperial edict of the Emperor be engraved in its entirety behind the engraved stones of Qin Shi Huang in various places, then later generations will understand who the stone carvings belong to." We risk our lives to ask for it. The Emperor gave a written order saying: "Yes."
