Víðarr, sometimes anglicized as Vidar, was an Isu of the Æsir and disgraced son of Odin.
Víðarr was deified as the god of vengeance in Norse mythology where he was described as the child of Odin and the jötunn Gríðr, and was foretold to avenge his father's death at the jaws of Fenrir by killing the wolf at Ragnarök.
Biography
At some point, Víðarr came to blows with Suttungr's agent Malvigr. Odin's son impressed her and she spared his life when she emerged victorious but Víðarr's reputation was damaged. Later, when Malvigr encountered Odin during Surtr's invasion of Svartálfaheimr, she pointed out that the Æsir's shame was undeserved.[1]
Legacy and influence
Víðarr had a totem named after him in the popular dice game Orlog, played during the 9th century. The piece "Vidar's Might" would remove a number of the opponents die from play for that turn. A Norse man in Fornburg, Rygjafylke possessed the piece, which he gave to the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan after being defeated.[2]
In 885, during the siege of Paris, the Viking leader Sigfred introduced Eivor to his horse which he had named after the god.[3]
