Roxana was a Greek champion who lived during the 5th century BCE.

Hailing from the island of Hydrea, Roxana was the last surviving member of her family, who all perished while participating in the Battle of One Hundred Hands. Roxana trained hard in order to participate and win the tournament to bring glory to her family. It was during this encounter that she met the misthios Kassandra, with whom she shared a close bond.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Early life[edit | edit source]

Living on her farm near the small settlement on Hydrea, Roxana followed in the footsteps of her father, brother, and mother in competing for the title and reward of Champion of the Battle of One Hundred Hands.[1] She made sacrifices and prayed to both Ares and Hermes as well as training from morning to sunset, and waking up during the night to strategize in order to become the best.[1][2] Though dedicated to honing her skills, Roxana did enjoy Sophokles' works, which captivated her.[3]

Roxana made the acquaintance of Drakios, the creator and organizer of the Battle of One Hundred Hands due to her family's involvement in his tournament. Drakios admired her, and in turn, she kept him informed of whoever she sparred with.[4]

Battle of One Hundred Hands[edit | edit source]

Roxana facing off against Kassandra in the finals

At some point during the 420s BCE, Roxana met the Spartan misthios Kassandra. They sparred and trained together[1], and grew close. Despite knowing that participating in the tournament would mean the death of the other, neither of them backed out of it.[2] In the end, they were the two finalists, and faced each other on Typhon's Revenge, as Drakios demanded there to be a Champion.[5]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

The name of Roxana, a character in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, is the Hellenization of the Persian name Roshanak, which she shares with a few notable Persian noblewomen, particularly the wife of Alexander the Great. Based on this, it is possible that Roxana has some Persian heritage, and is most likely from either Asia Minor or Cyprus, as there was intermarriage between Greeks and Persians within the Achaemenid Empire. Her relatively dark skin tone, however, is inconsistent with the typical appearance of either Greeks or Persians at the time; it may be considered a case of artistic license by Ubisoft Quebec.

Roxana's shield features the emblem of Boeotia in Athenian colors. This may suggest that her family either hailed from said regions, or was dedicated to them. If Roxana is slain, her shield can be looted as a trade good, with the description mentioning how even "the goddess Athena herself would be pleased to possess a shield such as this."

If Roxana is met before the Battle of One Hundred Hands, she can be recruited as a lieutenant aboard the Adrestia. This may also require pursuing a romance with her. If Roxana is romanced and recruited, she makes an appearance at the end of the memory Retribution, replacing Mikkos to share a moment with the Eagle Bearer.

The novel of the game features Roxana's namesake but they are otherwise different characters.

Roxana will be tagged as a huntress, but she is not affiliated with the Daughters of Artemis.
