Mutee'a (died 861) was an Arab youth who lived in Anbar during the 9th century, where she was a member of Dervis' thieves network. Like the rest of the street urchins working for Dervis, she was close to Basim ibn Ishaq, the oldest and most skilled of the group.

Biography[edit | edit source]

In 861, Dervis scolded Mutee'a for she provoking guards who were pestering her. When Basim left Dervis' quarters to begin retrieve a shipping ledger for the Hidden Ones, he found a sullen Mutee'a outside by the well. Mutee'a initially refused to explain why, but later opened up about what happened. Worried that Dervis would ask her to leave the group, Basim comforted her, explaining that Dervis was only worried and trying to protect her. Seeking to cheer her up, Basim thought of a plan to tease Dervis by sitting on a nearby rooftop and throwing rocks at the walls while he slept. Mutee'a agreed and Basim left shortly after.[1]

Later that night, Basim attempted to sneak into the palace to recover the contents of a chest, hoping the Hidden Ones would notice his act and accept him. However, he murdered the caliph Al-Mutawakkil in self-defense, which led the caliph's son Abu 'Abdallah to send guards after him. Basim's actions implicated Mutee'a and the rest of Dervis' network. As retribution, Mutee'a and the people living in Dervis' quarters were executed, with their bodies hanged on wooden poles for display. The next morning, Basim arrived too late and regretfully discovered the bodies of Mutee'a and the rest of the group.[1]
