"Amphipolis. This'll be a great empire one day."
―Kassandra upon visiting the city, c. 422 BCE.[src]

Amphipolis (Ancient Greek: Ἀμφίπολις) is a municipality in Makedonia, Greece, that was once a polis in classical anitquity.

During the Peloponnesian War, the city played a strategic and economic role due to the nearby silver mines. Originally settled by the Athenians, the city was subsequently captured by Brasidas of Sparta in 424 BCE.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

In 422 BCE, the city was the site of a historical battle between the defending Spartans led by Brasidas against the Athenians led by Kleon, who was also a Sage of the Delian League branch of the Cult of Kosmos. During the battle, Brasidas was killed by Deimos, who in turn was defeated by the Spartan misthios Kassandra. In the same battle, Kassandra also defeated Kleon, drowning him in the water.[2]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

The lion statues from the Terrace of the Lions are reused at the city entrance. While historically inaccurate to use these particular statues, this could be a reference to the Lion of Amphipolis.
