Kallisto the Bear

Kallisto the Bear was a legendary bear whose lair was located within the Golden Fields region of Arkadia, Greece during the 5th century BCE.

Myth[edit | edit source]

According to the Greek mythology, Kallisto was a nymph and a paramour of the god Zeus, with whom she sired Arkas. In retaliation for sleeping with Zeus, his wife Hera changed Kallisto into a bear out of revenge, and Zeus transformed her into the constellation Ursa Major after her death.[1]

During the Peloponnesian War, the bear was hunted down by the Spartan misthios Kassandra. Kassandra took its pelt as proof of her success to Daphnae, the leader of the Daughters of Artemis.[2]
