Biography[edit | edit source]

During the Peloponnesian War, the witch was one of the individuals who attended a gathering in Seriphos organized by Aetios, a scion of a wealthy family from Keos. There, she and the other girls sought to catch Aetios' eye and become his wife, gaining his riches and wealth. Having grown up alongside Aetios, the witch believed that she deserved to marry Aetios, who shown interest towards the gullible Kallikleia, one of the other girls attending the gathering. Refusing to let her marry Aetios, she plotted to change Aetios's mind and have him choose to marry her. The witch entered a conversation with Kallikleia, who was enlisting the help of the misthios Kassandra. The witch tricked Kallikleia into believing in the idea of a love potion. She asked Kassandra to help her retrieve the ingredients needed for it: several war mushrooms and wine. Secretly however, it was meant to be a poison for Kallikleia to develop rashes and in turn drop out of the ceremony.[1]

After Kassandra gathered the love potion's ingredients, she took them to Kallikleia and the witch near the Temple of Athena. The witch later remarked that she required a lock of hair from Kallikleia, who agreed, and asked Kassandra to attend the selection ceremony the following night at Aetios' House. Prior to the ceremony, the witch made the "love potion" and gave it to Kallikleia to drink. Contrary to what Kallikleia had wanted, the potion caused to lose her hair instead, to the extent that she became nearly bald.[1]

As the Hekate Witch had planned, Kallikleia lost favor and Aetios chose the witch as his wife instead during the selection ceremony. As Kassandra arrived at the house, the witch explained what happened and her rationale for doing so.[1]
