Alice (died 1872) was a field agent for the American Rite of the Templar Order who operated during the late 19th century.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Recovering the Precursor box[edit | edit source]
In 1872, Horace Greeley stole the Precursor box and Voynich manuscript pages that the Templars had entrusted to Ulysses S. Grant. They tasked Alice to recover them, and later poisoned Horace. Alice infiltrated Greeley's house in New York in the guise of a nurse to finish him off and retrieve the artifacts. While the Pinkerton agent Tommy Greyling stopped her from eliminating Horace, she succeeded in recovering the box and escaped by jumping out a window.[1]
Search for the pages[edit | edit source]
Alice soon received word that several of the manuscript's pages were stored in the British Museum in London, England. She traveled there and extorted Niall Hobday, a constable stationed at the museum, into helping her locate them by leveraging his gambling debts to the bookies, then used herself as a distraction to lure police away from the museum while Hobday searched for the pages. However, when Hobday failed in his task, Alice kidnapped the museum's Head Clerk of Acquisitions, Edward Feather, and brought him to a nearby slaughterhouse for interrogation.[2]

Tommy Greyling, the British Assassins Evie Frye and Henry Green, and the police eventually discovered Alice's whereabouts and headed to the slaughterhouse. Alice confronted them with the Blighters' help, and a firefight occurred, during which she stabbed Tommy with a knife,[2] though he survived thanks to his body armor. Alice then escaped the slaughterhouse and returned to the museum, having obtained information from Feather on the pages' whereabouts. She and several Blighters searched the Acquisitions Department before the Assassins and police again confronted them.[3]
Alice found the pages and fled the scene, with Tommy and Evie in pursuit. When she reached a dead end, she faked surrender before throwing a bomb that produced red smoke, allowing her to escape. Alice fled on a carriage, with Tommy chasing her through the streets of London.[3] Despite almost getting shot in the process, Alice managed to lose Tommy and succeeded in escaping with the pages.[4]
Death[edit | edit source]
Her mission in London a success, Alice boarded a ship to return to the United States and deliver the manuscript pages to the Templars. Unbeknownst to her, however, Tommy had followed her and soon confronted her on the ship's deck. Impressed, Alice offered the agent a chance to join the Templar Order, which Tommy declined. To prevent the pages from falling into the hands of the Assassins, Alice threw them into the Atlantic Ocean. Having grown fond of Tommy and knowing she would probably be locked up, Alice then warned the agent that his actions would not go unnoticed by her fellow Templars, before committing suicide by jumping into the ocean to drown in the strong rip currents.[4]
Personality and traits[edit | edit source]
During her interactions with Tommy Greyling, Alice was shown to be very flirtatious and adept at black humor. Underneath this exterior persona, however, she was implied to be afraid of failing her assignments and earning the wrath of her Templar superiors, as she was fully aware of what they were capable of. She told Tommy Greyling as much before ending her own life to avoid imprisonment and having to face the consequences of her mission's failure.[4]
Skills and equipment[edit | edit source]
Alice was shown to be a very skilled agent, easily defeating Tommy throughout their encounters and almost killing him several times.[1][2] She was also very cunning, as shown in her attempt to pose as a nurse to eliminate Horace Greeley,[1] and her successfully convincing both Niall Hobday and the Blighters to help her locate the manuscript pages.[3]
In terms of equipment, Alice wielded several knives that she used to injure her enemies,[1][2] as well as a bomb that produced red smoke and was capable of starting a fire when interacting with combustible materials such as tinder.[3]
