François Ascair (died 1609) was a member of the Parisian Rite of the Templar Order and part of judge Pierre de Lancre's witch-hunt.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Prior to 1609, François Ascair was part of missions in Florence, Italy, where he met and developed a rivalry with Assassin Fabrizzio Auditore.[1]

As one of the investigators of the witch-hunt court established in 1609, Ascair overheard a couple speaking of a healer who could be a witch, Catherine, and had the couple inform the judge, leading the Templars onto the trail of a Shroud of Eden.[2] After Catherine's arrest on witchcraft charges, Pierre de Lancre had Ascair shadow Bayonne's Lieutenant-General Jehan Sorhaindo as he went to visit Catherine and her daughter Ermeline. Ascair later reported the conversation between the three, as well as the conversation between mother and daughter that happened after Sorhaindo had left.[3]

Some short time later, Ascair and his men discovered the main lair of the Assassins in Bayonne. Ascair, along with La Morguy, was summoned by Pierre de Lancre to help plan the attack against the Assassins. Though they were unfriendly with each other, they eventually reached a consensus.[4] Following the successful attack and their recovery of the Shroud of Eden, Ascair was sent to the Castle of Saint-Pée with the Piece of Eden for safekeeping. He was joined by Templar reinforcements from Bordeaux and Toulouse.[5] Though stationed at Saint-Pée, Ascair continued his investigations, eventually leading to the location of Nicodemus, the Assassin who had stolen the Shroud from the Templars almost 20 years prior.[6]

When the Assassins infiltrated the castle, looking for the Shroud, Ascair was stationed outside Ermeline's bedroom at the castle, and surprised Margaux and Fabrizzio as the pair tracked down the Shroud. François and Fabrizzio taunted each other before the Templar rushed the Assassin and Margaux slipped into the bedroom.[1] While Margaux and Ermeline fought, François and Fabrizzio managed to kill one another.[7]
