Acanthos of Sparta, also known as Acanthos the Lakedaemonian,[1] was a Spartan athlete who lived during the 8th century BCE.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Acanthos won the diaulos (400m) and the dolichos (4.8km) races in the Olympic Games of 720 BCE and was known for being the first to practice sports naked, a practice that was soon widely adopted.[2]
