Timotheos was a Korinthian fisherman who lived during the 5th century BCE. The elder son of Diokles and older brother to Lykinos, he made the acquaintance of the misthios Kassandra during the Peloponnesian War.

Biography[edit | edit source]

In the early stage of the Peloponnesian War, Timotheos served in the Athenian army with his father.[1] His brother Lykinos left home for Athens to pursue poetry instead.[2] Timotheos' father attained a high ranking position in the war and later retired to their home in the Port of Kechries, working as a fisherman. Over the course of the war, Timotheos was deeply affected by the deaths of his fellow soldiers, resulting in him leaving the army and returning home, following in the footsteps of his father.[1]

Timotheos telling Lykinos of their father's death

Unbeknownst to Timotheos and Lykinos, their father began borrowing money from the bandit leader Hypatos to gamble and soon was in a sizable debt.[3] As a result, Hypatos had Diokles killed and captured Lykinos, holding him captive at the Ancient Sanctuary of Zeus. Timotheos returned home to find Lykinos and the misthios Kassandra, who had freed and rescued Lykinos. Timotheos informed Lykinos of their father's passing, asking him to prepare for the burial ceremony.[4]

Soon after, Timotheos requested Kassandra's help with recovering his father's own personal armor, which he said had been stolen from their home. If she was unable do so, Timotheos suggested that she purchase a standard Athenian armor from a nearby merchant.[4]

Kassandra did as asked and returned to Timotheos and Lykinos at the ceremony, having also fulfilled Lykinos' request of killing the bandits responsible for their father's death. Timotheos and Lykinos subsequently requested Kassandra's aid again, this time in collecting an offering of oil and an offering of wine respectively.[5]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
