Akantha (died c. 429 BCE), also known by her epithet as the Deceiver, was a member of the Order of Hunters branch of the Persian Order of the Ancients who operated in Greece during the 5th century BCE.

After the leader of their Order charged the Order of Hunters to seek out and eliminate the "Tainted Ones", the branch's Magus Pactyas the Huntsman led his followers into Makedonia, Greece.^[1]

While in Makedonia, Akantha made the acquaintance of Makedonia's leader and eventually became his wife, ensuring that he would do anything for her.^[2] While Akantha lived at his house in Amphipolis, she often visited the Olynthos Fortress with her husband and held parties there. She also managed to talk her husband into securing guards for her shipments. However, not everyone was in love with Akantha. There were rumors she was unfaithful, though her husband disbelieved them, sending officers to investigate the rumors and deal accordingly with those who spreading them.^[3]

When Darius tasked the misthios Kassandra to find out clues within Olynthos Fortress regarding where and when the man known as the Recruiter would meet with his minions, Kassandra also found a letter written by Makedonia's leader to his wife.^[4] Having discovered her true identity, Kassandra infiltrated the leader's house and assassinated Akantha.^[5]

Akantha considered men exceptionally easy to manipulate, with her husband, Makedonia's leader proving no exception. She used her position as his wife to spread her web of lies. As the leader's wife, Akantha believed it gave her immunity to hunt down the Tainted Ones.^[6]

Akantha ( Ἄκανθα) is an Ancient Greek name meaning "thorn, prickle", possibly derived from from ἀκή (akḗ) "thorn" and‎ ἄνθος (ánthos) "flower". She shares her name with the mythical figure of Akantha, a nymph whom the god Apollo fell in love with and then changed into the Acanthus plant because she rebuffed his advances.
