Harek Gand (died 870s) was a former Viking who lived in Norway during the 9th century.

Biography[edit | edit source]

In his early years, Harek faithfully served under King Halfdan the Black and participated in his campaigns to subdue the neighbouring petty kingdoms.[1] During a battle against King Sigtyg of Raumarike,[2], Harek shot an arrow under King Sigtyg's left arm, allowing Halfdan to kill him and claim his kingdom. For this deed, Harek was gifted a bow by Halfdan as a reward.[1] After Halfdan died in 860 when he drowned in a frozen lake[2], Harek helped to recover his body from the lake. Halfdan's son Harald gifted Harek a silver harpoon head as a gift.[1]

In his later years, Harek became fearful that his belongings, included the prized treasures he received, would be sold off by his children. Thus, he decided to packed them into straw-filled crates with the intention of throwing it off the cliffs to "accompany" him in the afterlife. Harek travelled up the Fannaraki Summit with a horse wagon, unloading his cargo next to a cliff. There, Harek was found by Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan, who was puzzled by his load of cargo. Harek requested her help in throwing down the creates, which she agreed to do so. Once that was completed, Harek thanked her for her efforts and immediately jumped off the cliff to his death.[1]
