"Many of you knew my father, Halfdan the Black. A great man who achieved great things."
―Harald on his father, 872.[src]-[m]

Halfdan the Black (c. 810 – c. 860) was a 9th century petty king of Vestfold and the father of Harald Fairhair, the first king of a unified Norway.

Biography[edit | edit source]

While alive, Halfdan owned the Yngling Seax, a sword that he sought to pass down to his son, but the seax was misplaced and its location forgotten.[1] Following Halfdan's passing, he was succeeded by Harald, who would go on to unite the various petty kingdoms together under his crown.[2] At least a decade after Halfdan's passing, Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan found the blade in the town Eikundarsund within the region of Rygjafylke and claimed it for herself.[1]
