Silphium

Silphium or silphion was a medicinal plant that flourished in the wide fields of Cyrenaica during the 1st century BCE.

By 47 BCE, it was widely believed to work as a cure for a number of afflictions, as well as a being a general pain reliever and a contraceptive.^[1] During this time, the fields of silphium were heavily guarded, and stealing the plant was punishable by death.^[1]

At some point in 47 BCE, a group of silphium farmers gave refuge to a runaway gladiator, Polymestor.^[2]
