A silphium farm

Silphium or silphion was a medicinal plant that flourished in the wide fields of Cyrenaica during the 1st century BCE.

In 47 BCE, it was widely believed to work as a cure for a number of afflictions, as well as a pain reliever and a contraceptive.[1]

By 47 BCE, the fields of silphium were strictly guarded, and stealing the plant was punishable by death.[1]

At some point in 47 BCE, a group of silphium farmers gave refuge to a runaway gladiator, Polymestor.[2]
