Olof
Olof was a tenth century Svear farmer and subject of Eric the Victorious, king of Svealand.
History
In 985 Olof received the Bidding Stick, summoning him and his neighbors, such as Östen Jorundsson and Alferth, under a ledung of his king, Eric the Victorious, in order to repel an assault by Eric's nephew, Styrbjörn the Strong.[1] Once gathered under the ledung, Olof was among thirty men selected by the skald and secret member of the Brotherhood Thorvald Hjaltason to engage in guerrilla tactics and harry Styrbjorn's force of Jomsvikings before it met with Eric's forces at the Battle of Fýrisvellir.[2] First Thorvald had Olof and the others build a palisade in the Fyriswater forcing Styrbjorn and his men to disembark early. Then while Thorvald left to assassinate Palnatoke, the leader of the Jomsvikings, Olof and the other men were sent by Östen who had been left in charge and sent to lay traps and snares in the Mirkwood that lie between Styrbjorn's men and the fields of Fýrisvellir while Östen applied poison provided by Thorvald to them. Once Styrbjorn's forces made in through the Mirkwood and made camp for the night to tend the wounded and dying Thorvald's men conducted hit and run maneuvers to thin the numbers more but not without their own losses, being reduced to half.[3] However, Olof survived the night.[4]
