The Nile is a river that flows through a number of African countries before emptying into the Mediterranean Sea via Egypt.

As the primary waterway and means of transport for ancient Egypt, the Nile has played a vital role in the country's history; many of the country's largest cities, including Cairo and a number of ancient cities like Alexandria, Herakleion, Memphis, and Thebes resided on the banks of the river.

Trivia

The ancient Egyptians called Nile also "Ar", meaning black, referencing the fertile, black silt the yearly floods left behind.
