Kyoto (京都) and originally Heian-kyo (平安京), is a major city in Japan known for having served as its imperial capital for centuries since the Heian period. It was originally modelled after the Tang capital of Chang'an in China. With the establishment of the Tokugawa shogunate, its prominence was superseded by that of the shogunate's capital, Edo. After the Imperial Court's victory over the Tokugawa forces in Boshin War, Kyoto was no longer the national capital after Emperor Meiji moved to Edo, rechristening it as Tokyo.[1]
