Kyoto

Kyoto (京都), known as Kyoto City (京都市) and originally Heian-kyo (平安京), is a populous city located that forms the Keihanshin metropolitan area with Osaka and Kobe. It is also part of its own prefecture. The city was originally modelled after the Tang Chinese capital of Chang'an. For centuries, Kyoto was the capital of Imperial Court of Japan since the Heian period. After the Boshin War, the city was no longer the capital of Japan with the Imperial Court relocating to the newly rechristened Tokyo (formerly known as Edo).
