The Suez Canal is an artifical level waterway in Egypt which connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea. Since its inception, the canal has been a popular trade route between Europe and Asia and was the site of the infamous Suez Crisis fought during the Cold War between Egypt, Israel, the United Kingdom, and France.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

The construction of the canal began in 1859 and was presided over by Khedive Ismail Pasha, the viceroy of Egypt. He had been pressured by the French to finish work on the canal, and was forced to make use of forced labour despite his own stance against it. Following its completion in 1869, a celebration was held at the Khedivial Opera House by Ismail Pasha to commemorate its opening, with Queen Eugénie de Montijo of France as the guest of honor.[2] The inaugural opening of the canal was celebrated as being able to ensure better links and faster exploitation of the British Empire's colonies.[3]

In 1873, the British Assassin Pierrette Arnaud infiltrated a Templar-run illegal art ring at a business besides the canal. After investigating the business and interrogating a young Templar, she discovered several names and businesses aligned with the Order, and left the young Templar injured but alive.[4]
