The Battle of Toba-Fushimi occurred between the Imperial and Tokugawa forces during the Boshin War in Japan. The battle started on January 27, 1868, when the forces of Choshu, Satsuma and Tosa Domains clashed near the village of Fushimi, which was located near Kyoto. The battle lasted for four days, ending in a decisive victory for the Imperial forces.

The Shiba family took part in the battle with Atsuko disguising herself as a man to join an ashigaru battalion from the feudal domain of Aizu while Tanomo participated in the fight and Ibuka fled from the battlefield. The death of Tanomo broke the bond between the Shiba siblings with Atsuko vowing never to speak or see Ibuka ever again.[1]
