Wantage (Old English: Wanating) is a market town in Oxfordshire, England. Historically lying within the boundaries of Berkshire, it was the birthplace of Alfred the Great.

History

According to King Alfred's biographer, Asser, Wantage was a royal vill, a central settlement of a rural territory in Anglo-Saxon England, which would be visited by members of the royal household on regular circuits of their kingdoms.[1] It was at this royal estate that Alfred was born, circa 849.

In the late 9th century, the Viking Geirmund Hjörrsson and his company of Hel-hides visited Wanating during their march to divert Alfred's attention from Guthrum's army. Having learned it was the birthplace of Alfred, the Hel-hides made for the settlement, only to find an empty fortress in which they pitched camp for the night. Alfred and his Saxons marched through the night to reach them and they besieged the Vikings for a few days before abruptly leaving and heading west.[2] The Hel-hides were confused, but later learned the Saxons had left to engage[3] Ubba Ragnarsson's forces in battle[4] near the River Avon.[3] Geirmund soon cremated his fallen warriors, including Thorgrim, and left Wanating aflame.[4]
