Tyrian purple is a dye made from the murex shellfish, especially on Kythera Island, where a whole settlement sprung up around the production and handling of the dye.
Millions of the creatures were required to produce even a small amount of the dye, which was subsequently greatly valued.[1] This meant that whoever could afford to dress in clothes dyed Tyrian purple was considered wealthy, like the self-proclaimed 'god' Empedokles.[2][3]
Tyrian purple was also considered valuable to the Romans who used it in the production of their ceremonial robes.[4]
Behind the scenes
Tyrian purple gets its name from the city of Tyre, the home city of the Phoenicians, who are credited for inventing the dye. Because of this, Tyrian purple also goes by the name 'Phoenician purple'.[5]
