The Immortals (died 420s BCE) were twin Persian brothers who served as Magi within the Order of the Ancients, leading the Order of Dominion branch alongside Gergis.
Biography
Known for their potent skills and similarity in combat, the brothers were noted to be seemingly unbeatable and untouchable warriors. It was for this reason that were chosen by the Order leader Amorges to serve as his personal enforcers.[1] Circa 422 BCE, the brothers were deployed by Amorges with the rest of the branch to Achaia in Greece to hunt down the misthios Kassandra, Darius and Natakas. Along with Amorges, the Immortals launched an attack on the village of Dyme, seeking to draw out the misthios and Darius.[2]
They succeeded in drawing out Darius and were almost able to kill him before being stopped by the arrival of Kassandra. Despite outnumbering the misthios with their Persian guards, the Immortals were defeated and killed.[2]
Later on, Gergis, a fellow Magi from the same branch, erected a memorial for the brothers alongside Pactyas and Phila on a small hill near Pedasos Camp in Messenia.[1]
Trivia
- The Immortals was the name given by Herodotos to an elite armed infantry unit of the Achaemenid Empire, serving the roles of both the Imperial guard and standing army.
- These soldiers were dubbed the Immortals because it was said that they would never allow their numbers to drop below ten-thousand, and no Greek reportedly saw one of these men dead on the battlefield.
