Silphium or silphion was a medicinal plant that flourished in the wide fields of Cyrenaica during the 1st century BCE.
By 47 BCE, it was widely believed to work as a cure for a number of afflictions, as well as a being a general pain reliever and a contraceptive.[1] During this time, the fields of silphium were heavily guarded, and stealing the plant was punishable by death.[1]
At some point in 47 BCE, a group of silphium farmers gave refuge to a runaway gladiator, Polymestor.[2]
In the 8th century CE, the abbot Adrian of Cyrenaica developed an ale recipe with silphium, giving the beverage a smooth flavor and a tender aroma. Traveling to the region of Kent in England, he brought his recipe with a supply of silphium. By 870's CE, monks built a priory in the region, using Adrian's recipe and silphium in their ale's production.[3]
