The Sacred Way was a road leading from Elis City to the Sanctuary of Olympia in Elis, Greece. On the side of the road at one point was placed a statue of the legendary hero Herakles, dedicated by a citizen of Taranto.
According to tradition, the whole company of athletes and their companions set out from Elis City two days before the Olympic Games begun, and followed the coastal road until they reached the Spring of Piera where they performed rites, including sacrificing a pig.
During the Peloponnesian War the misthios Kassandra traversed the road.[1]
