Olof was a 10th-century Svear farmer and subject of Eric the Victorious, the King of Svealand.
History[edit | edit source]
In 985, Olof received the Bidding Stick, summoning him, Östen Jorundsson, Alferth, and their neighbors under the conscription practice of ledung for their King Eric, in order to repel an invasion by Eric's nephew, Styrbjörn the Strong.[1] Once gathered under the ledung, Olof was among thirty men selected by the skald and secret Hidden One Thorvald Hjaltason to engage in guerrilla tactics and harry Styrbjörn's force of Jomsvikings before it met with Eric's army at the Battle of Fýrisvellir.[2]
First, Thorvald had Olof and the others build a palisade in the waters of the Fyriswater, forcing Styrbjörn and his men to disembark early. After Thorvald placed Östen in charge of the warband, he left to assassinate Palnatoke, the leader of the Jomsvikings. Östen then ordered Olof and the other men to lay traps and snares in the Mirkwood between Styrbjörn's men and Fýrisvellir's fields while he applied poison provided by Thorvald to them.[3]
Once Styrbjörn's forces emerged from the Mirkwood and made camp for the night to tend to their wounded and dying, Thorvald's men conducted hit-and-run maneuvers to thin the numbers more. Although this caused them to lose half of their own warriors,[3] Olof was among those who survived the night.[4]
