The Nile is one of the longest rivers of the world, flowing through a number of African countries before emptying into the Mediterranean Sea via Egypt.
As the primary waterway and means of transport for Egypt, the Nile has played a vital role in the country's history; the vast majority of the country's cities, including Cairo, Alexandria, Memphis, and Thebes, were built on the banks of the river.
