The Nile is a river that flows through a number of African countries before emptying into the Mediterranean Sea via Egypt.

As the primary waterway and means of transport for ancient Egypt, the Nile has played a vital role in the country's history; many of the country's largest cities, including Cairo and a number of ancient cities like Alexandria, Herakleion, Memphis, and Thebes resided on the banks of the river.
