| This article is about the paramour of Drakon. You may be looking for Melanippos (mythology), the son of Oedipous. |
Melanippos was a Boeotian athlete who lived in Thebes during the 5th century BCE.
History[edit | edit source]
At some point Melanippos moved to Thebes dreaming of becoming a pankratist. As he reached the Gymnasium, he saw Drakon and fell in love with the man. Drakon trained him, and they used to spend nights and days at the Gymnasium. However, when the Peloponnesian War raged, Drakon seemed to be distracted, and no longer spent as much time with Melanippos as before.[1]
Certain that Drakon had found someone else, Melanippos decided to make a love potion. While pondering this over, the Spartan misthios Kassandra came to the Gymnasium looking for Drakon. Melanippos asked her to help him brew the potion, and Kassandra agreed.[1]
