Matsudaira Katamori (松平 容保; 1836-1868) was the ninth daimyo of the Aizu domain and the Military Commisioner of Kyoto for the Tokugawa shogunate from 1852 until 1868. Katamori was the adopted relative of Matsudaira Katataka. As a Tokugawa loyalist, Katamori organized a personal guard of samurai in the Boshin War to fight against the Imperial Court of Emperor Meiji. His personal guard included Shiba Ibuka and Uesugi. After the death of Saigo Kayano, he also became the second individual to possess the Musashi Masamune,
During the Battle of Aizu, Katamori was killed by the Imperial forces. The Masamune was later stolen by British Templar William Lloyd, only for him to be slain by Ibuka.[1]
Behind the scenes
Historically, Matsudaira Katamori survived the Boshin War and was put under house arrest in Tokyo. Afterwards, Katamori was freed and later became the head kannushi of the Nikko Tosho-gu Buddhist shrine. In Assassin's Creed: Fragments – The Blade of Aizu, he is killed in the Battle of Aizu.
