Amphipolis is a municipality in the Roots of an Empire regional unit of Greece. In classical antiquity, it was a polis that was part of the region of Makedonia.
During the Peloponnesian War, the city played a strategic and economic role due to the nearby silver mines. Originally settled by the Athenians, the city was subsequently captured by Brasidas of Sparta in 424 BCE.[1]
History
In 422 BCE, the city was the site of a battle between the defending Spartans led by Brasidas against the Athenians led by Kleon, who was also a Sage of the Cult of Kosmos. During the battle, Brasidas was killed by Deimos, who in return was defeated by the Spartan misthios Kassandra. At the same time, Kassandra also defeated Kleon, drowning him in the water.[2]
